As it stands today a large majority of the Farm Bill, including the nutrition title, is now law!

Both the House and Senate voted in an overwhelming majority to overturn the President's veto this week. Thank you to all those who encouraged their state legislators to vote for this important bill.

Please contact your lawmakers who voted in favor of the Farm Bill and express your appreciation for their support in the fight against hunger. Read more by clicking the link below.

May 20, 2008 - Congress Passes Farm Bill With Veto Proof Majority But Fight Still Not Over!

Last week, the House and Senate passed the Farm Bill with an overwhelming majority. In fact, both houses were able to muster enough votes to override a presidential veto. However, the work is not yet done. The President still plans to veto the Farm Bill, sending it back to Congress before it can become law. Therefore, if your Member of Congress voted in favor of the Farm Bill, it is critically important to contact them, thank them for their vote, and urge them to override the President's veto. If they opposed the Farm Bill, you can explain why the Farm Bill and federal nutrition programs are important to you and your community. We encourage you to contact each of your legislators through the Hunger Action Center to ensure that the Farm Bill will be passed once and for all!

As we've seen time and time again, young children are often times the most generous with their hearts, and the East Salem Elementary students that visited the SWVA Second Harvest Food Bank proved that once again.  60 third graders wearing orange, the color of hunger, visited the Food Bank to tour our facility and learn how they could help, but we quickly realized that these kids already knew the first lesson in Food Banking… generosity.  Before their tour, the third grade classes' unloaded boxes laden with food, which they then donated to the hungry of this region. The food they provided will be used to serve more than 600 meals to Southwestern Virginia's hungry men, women, and children.  Thank you East Salem Elementary for your big hearts, and your willingness to help!

If your child's class would like to visit the Food Bank for a tour contact Amy Milberger at (540) 342-3011 x26

The program is dedicated to keeping used books out of the trash, and getting them into the hands of the nations less fortunate people. Baldacci recently sat down with the Roanoke Times’ Laurie Edwards.
