Food Bank Assists Red Cross at VT Day of Remembrance

The Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank was honored to again assist the Hokie Nation in its time of need.

In response to a request from the American Red Cross, the SWVA Second Harvest Food Bank sent a truck loaded with water, snacks, and volunteers to Blacksburg to assist the Red Cross in refreshing the many emergency workers, students, faculty, and visitors that were on campus for the Day of Remembrance at Virginia Tech.

On April 16, 2007, the Salvation Army responded to Virginia Tech within hours of the tragic shooting, and began serving hot meals and coffee to the exhausted law en-forcement officers, paramedics, and other emergency responders on campus. As the food supply began running low, it was clear the Food Bank would need to assist in the massive effort. Over the course of the next week, the Food Bank contributed over 20,000 pounds of food and drinks to the effort, including 2,700 pounds of meat, 6,400 pounds of produce and 4,600 pounds of bread and snacks.

We have had the honor of working side-by-side with students, faculty, and alumni of Virginia Tech in the fight against hunger, and our Hokie friends have faithfully supported us as the backbone of our volunteer force for years. Our hearts go out to our Hokie family.
